Das Festival findet im Herbst 2019 zum 18. Mal statt und hat sich zum Bekanntesten dieser Art in Deutschland entwickelt. In Europa zählt es für die Fans neben drei ähnlichen Festivals in Frankreich, Niederlande und im vereinigten Königreich zu den Highlights des Cajun & Zydeco Jahres. Eine Eintrittskarte für das Festival ist nur ein Bruchteil dessen, was eine Reise in das Mississippi-Delta kostet und man hat drei Stunden lang die perfekte Illusion in das quirlige Leben dort eingetaucht zu sein. All die eingeladenen Künstler sind in den Clubs von New Orleans bis Lafayette angesagte Größen und fast alle zum ersten Mal in Deutschland und der Schweiz zu hören.

Joe Hall stammt aus einer Familie von hart arbeitenden Farmern aus Arnaudville in Südwest-Louisiana. Zum Leben einer Farmer-Familie gehörte damals natürlich auch Musik und so hörte er seinem Großvater ‚Ned King Hall‘ beim Akkordeonspielen zu. Mit sieben Jahren hat er angefangen selber zu üben. Er hat seine Helden Bois Sec Ardoin, Canray Fontenot, Carlton Frank und Calvin Carrière besucht und von ihnen gelernt. Heute ist Joe Hall einer der letzten der alten Garde mit einem ganz eigenwilligen Stil. Er und seine Canecutters tragen die kreolische Kultur weiter. Marshall Baker und Mark Palms sind die weiteren Canecutters, die an der musikalischen Zuckerrohrpresse den dicken Cajun-Sirup pressen. Marshall Baker spielt die Fiddle. Er kommt aus Portland, Oregon. Sein Vater brachte ihm mit 6 Jahren das Musizieren bei und er war bald bei den traditionellen Wettbewerben immer unter den Top 5. Als er Joe kennenlernte, zog er nach Louisiana um. Der Gitarrist Mark Palms studiert seit Jahrzehnten traditionelle amerikanische Musik von West Virgina bis West Afrika. Er traf Joe Hall zum ersten Mal beim Mardi Gras 2005. Es funkte und seitdem arbeiten sie zusammen.

Nach dem Riesenerfolg in der Band von Ruben Moreno kommt Dwight ‚Blackcat‘ Carrier 2019 auf vielfachen Wunsch mit seiner eigenen Band. Der Bandleader, Akkordeonist und Sänger stammt aus einer langen Reihe von angesehenen Musikern. Denjenigen, die gerne Ahnenforschung betreiben sei gesagt, dass er der Neffe von Roy Carrier und der Cousin von Troy „Dikki Du“ und Chubby Carrier ist. Also aus einer Familie stammt, in der Zydeco-Musik mehr als nur ein Zeitvertreib für Ferien und Familienfeiern ist. Er verkörpert sowohl Tradition als auch einen einzigartigen Stil, der von seinen Blues- und R&B-Einflüssen geprägt ist. Am besten beschreibt man das musikalisches Bemühen dieser Band die Seele des Zydeco und Soul zu enträtseln und zu interpretieren als „Zydeco Soul“.

Das ACBZF hat schon oft geglänzt und Gitarren-Perlen aus dem Mississippi-Delta als erstes einem großen europäischen Publikum präsentiert. Unter anderem sei ein gewisser Brother Dege genannt ... Michael Juan Nunez aus Lafayette/Louisiana wird sicher ein weiteres Gitarren-Highlight aus dem tiefen Süden und sich in die Hall of Fame des ACBZFs eintragen. Der Sänger, Songschreiber und Gitarrist, der seine Wurzeln in der Südstaaten-Kultur tief geschlagen hat, hat schon 5 Solo-CDs veröffentlicht. Sein Blues ist frisch und wild.  Sein Gitarrenspiel ist rau und leidenschaftlich. Die Gitarre schreit und jammert. Er komponiert Melodien, die sowohl in der Tradition stehen als
auch diese neu erfinden. In seinem Gesang schwingt und hallt nach das Echo der vor langer Zeit verlorenen Dancehalls seiner Heimat. Kein Wunder, dass auch amerikanische Filmemacher auf ihn aufmerksam wurden und seine Songs als Soundtrack der TV-Serie ‚True Blood‘ und im Piloten der Amazon-Serie ‚Cocked‘ eingesetzt haben. Er hat mit Henry Gray, Sonny Landreth, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Roddie Romero, Corey Harris, Doug Kershaw und der New Orleans-Legende Dr. John gespielt. Er ist oft in der Band von Brother Dege zu hören.

This festival honors the particular genres from Louisiana with artists from USA and Europe. Since 2001, it has become one of the most famous of its kind in Germany and belongs to the highlights of the genre’s festivals, along with three similar festivals in France, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. For a fraction of the cost of a flight to the Mississippi Delta, the spectator remains immersed in the perfect illusion of the buoyant life in the swamps and prairies of Southwest Louisiana for more than three hours. In this music, familiar instruments like guitars, accordions and fiddles are played in a fresh and vibrant way: with its driving beat, heartfelt emotions, and trance-like melodies it strikes a chord with 21st century ears.

All the invited artists are hot tickets in the clubs from New Orleans to Lafayette and most of them play in Germany for the first time. Their performance in Atlantis tonight is the only concert in Switzerland.

Joe Hall The Hall family was blessed with a hard-working father figure who provided in every way for his family out on the southwest Louisiana prairies. Even though Joe never had to work in the fields like most of the Creole share croppers since the days of the Civil War, his is an old soul. He lent an attentive ear to the ancient wisdom from his elders and to his grandfather playing the accordion. At the age of seven, he started to play and continued to study with the old masters. Joe Hall accepted the torch of the Creole cultural flame. 

Marshall Baker grew up in Portland, Oregon USA. His father taught him to play the fiddle when he was six and he hasn’t stopped playing since. He entered local and national contests and usually placing top five in the state championships. When he met Joe, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mark Palms chased the heritage of traditional American music by studying knee-to-knee with cultural giants from West Virginia to West Africa. Mark joined forces with Joe Hall when they met in Louisiana at the Eunice Mardi Gras in 2005. Mark continues to honor the legacy of traditional masters through performing and teaching.

The bandleader, accordion player, and singer Carrier comes from a long line of distinguished musicians, a family where zydeco music was far more than a pastime for holidays and family gatherings. He embodies both tradition and a unique style that is infused with his blues and R&B influences.

Growing up in Church Point, Louisiana, in the time when rap music was gaining popularity, Carrier’s friends would laugh when he and his brother Joseph practiced their zydeco music. After many gigs around the world with the Creole Zydeco Snap Band, Dwight formed his band Black Cat and the Zydeco Ro Doggs in 2008. They have taken their pumping style of music to both coasts and the Midwest as well as throughout Louisiana. Their musical venture can best be described as the decoding of the soul of Zydeco and interpret it as “Zydeco Soul”.

Upon multiple request, Dwight “Blackcat” Carrier performs with his own band at the ‘American Cajun, Blues & Zydeco Festival 2019’.

This singer, guitarist and songwriter is from South Louisiana and his music taps into the heart of American southern culture. It’s fresh, and urgent, yet unmistakably sprouting from very deep roots. His music paints pictures of life – as seen through the eyes of southern Louisiana. His guitar playing is raw and passionate…moaning, screaming, singing, and driving modern day melodies, with echoes of long lost dancehalls. The artist has released 5 solo records for ParishLine Records.

Along the way, he has also worked, recorded, co-written and performed with many other artists, including Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Chubby Carrier, New Orleans icon Dr. John among many others. It is no surprise that his music has been featured in the hit HBO series True Blood, The Life Time Network holiday movie Christmas On The Bayou. Michael can often be seen playing guitar for Brother Dege’s Band The Brethren.
