Yumi Ito ist eine Schweizer Sängerin, Songwriterin, Produzentin, Arrangeurin mit japanisch-polnischen Wurzeln und Sitz in Basel. Sie performt regelmässig auf der ganzen Welt und hat die Bühne mit Künstler*innen wie Al Jarreau, Becca Stevens, Kurt Rosenwinkel und Mark Turner geteilt.

Yumi Ito verpackt in ihrer Musik Gesellschafts-Geschichten, welche Welten gelten, egal, ob klein oder gross, hell oder düster. Dementsprechend divers klingt denn auch der Sound: ein Amalgam aus allerlei Stilen. Wirkt vertrackt, ist es aber nicht. Die japanisch-polnisch-stämmige Musikerin, Komponistin, Produzentin und Arrangeurin findet auf Basis hunderter Stunden Übung stets eine klare Linie mit Stil. Wie eine Zen-Meisterin, welche aus der Ferne das Geschehen betrachtet, einordnet und niederschreibt; klar, konzentriert und klug. Yumi Ito lebt und arbeitet in Basel, performt aber regelmässig auf der ganzen Welt. Ihre eigene Kunst beinhaltet Jazz, Art-Pop, Electronica, Freie Improvisation und Neoklassik, flexibel aufführbar vom Solo bis zum Orchester, und erzählt – natürlich – stets Geschichten.

Eine Big-Band-Platte, welche jegliche Stilgrenzen durchquert, geschrieben und arrangiert für ein elfköpfiges Ensemble: Das ist mutig! Und wurde tatsächlich vollbracht auf Yumi Itos neuer LP « Stardust Crystals». Die Schweizerin schrieb ein Acht-Lied-Album, worauf Neoklassik, Art-Pop und progressive Electronica auf klassische Jazz-Ästhetik treffen und dem Sound eine einzigartige Wendung geben. Hinzu kommen die Themen der Stücke: Geschichten aus den hellen und dunklen Zeiten des Leben, jede einzelne wie ein intimer Eintrag, der einem Tagebuch Seite für Seite entrissen wurde. Das fertige Material wurde 2018 in den Hardstudios Winterthur in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Schweizer Radio SRF Kultur 2 aufgenommen und ist ab November 2020 auf allen relevanten Plattformen zu erleben.

 Yumi Ito is a Japanese-Polish vocalist, songwriter, producer and arranger based in Basel, Switzerland. She performs regularly all around the world and has shared the stage with artists such as Al Jarreau, Becca Stevens, Nils Petter Molvaer and Mark Turner.

Yumi Ito weaves into her music stories about society – stories about worlds, regardless of how large or small, or bright or dark they might be. Her sound is equally diverse, presenting itself as an amalgam of several styles. What might seem tricky, really isn’t: the musician, composer, producer and arranger with Japanese and Polish roots expertly navigates a clear stylistic path, based on hundreds of hours of practice. Like a Zen master she observes, classifies and writes down events from a distance – precise, concentrated and wise. Yumi Ito lives and works in Basel, performs regularly all around the world. Her own art includes jazz, art-pop, electronica, free improvisation and neo-classical music, flexibly performable from solo to orchestra, while - of course - always telling a story.

Everything about Yumi Ito’s new LP titled Stardust Crystals is absolutely audacious! It’s a big band record, which she wrote and arranged for an 11-piece outfit. The material traverses neo-classical, art-pop, references progressive electronica and gives a singular twist to a classical jazz sound. And then there’s the choice of topics: stories about the highs and lows of life, each one like a an intimate entry snatched from the pages of a diary. The final material was recorded in 2018, at the Hardstudios Winterthur, in cooperation with Swiss Radio SRF Kultur 2 and will be available on all relevant platforms in November 2020.
