Das Quartett aus Basel überrascht mit vielseitigen Arrangements, gespickt mit Elementen aus Jazz und Rock. Spielfreude, eine authentische Bühnenpräsenz, Dascha Lüschers facettenreiche Stimme und ein Hauch von der unbändigen Energie eines James Brown machen die Konzerte von The Daschenka Project zum besonderen Erlebnis.

Der Sänger Chris Eckman wurde in den 80er-Jahren mit „The Walkabouts“ bekannt. Mit seiner neuen Band „The Strange“ veröffentlicht er nun das Album „Echo Chamber“. Hier trifft die rauchige und gefühlvolle Stimme des US-Rockers auf melodische Songs.

Die Globalisierung macht vor nichts und niemandem halt. Schon gar nicht vor der Popkultur. Eine kroatische Surfband, aber im Westcoast-Sound der 70er-Jahre und dazu ein bekannter US-Rocker am Mikrofon, das lässt dann doch aufhorchen.

Twang-Gitarren scheppern, der Bass wummert, Keyboards jubilieren und eine großartige Bläserfraktion setzt immer wieder melodische Akzente. Das Ganze klingt so raffiniert, als hätten Kompositionsgenies wie Lee Hazlewood oder Van Dyke Parks ihre Finger im Spiel gehabt.

„The Strange“ gibt es schon seit den Nuller Jahren. Die „Bambi Molesters“, eine Hobby Surfpunk-Truppe aus Zagreb, hatten Chris Eckman damals ins Studio eingeladen. Eigentlich nur, um ein bisschen Gitarre zu spielen. Daraus wurde eine jahrelange Freundschaft und schließlich eine neue Band.

The Strange is a fusion of Croatian surf-rockers The Bambi Molesters and American singer/songwriter Chris Eckman - once the main force behind the American band The Walkabouts – and the two blend so well together it feels like a match made in heaven.

Soothingly far apart from any Balkan-brass clichés, The Strange is something quite different than just the sum of US-Roots and Balkan-folk. Rather, they create an Americana-Background for Eckman’s gravelly voice, full of Texmex and Morricone melancholy, adding psychedelic, twang, a little bit of blues and country – like a slow walk through American music. They strikingly blend atmospheres where day never breaks, from dramatic to funky and nostalgic.

Now, a long fourteen years after "Nights of Forgotten Films" (2004), a beautiful piece of Americana that could be compared with the key works of Calexico and Lambchop, a second album has finally arrived. "Echo Chamber" (2018) is a broadening and deepening of their music. It’s a wonderful album recorded by souls, first lost and then found in the universe of music. It would be such a loss for all of us if those souls had never met.

There are moments here and there that hint that the song subjects aren’t what they immediately appear to be, ‘Fast Train to Nowhere’ is a clear allegory of the current political climate. “This song accurately describes how I feel here in Croatia: on the edge of nowhere, where a train for the better future, the one we were waiting for since the time we were born, will never arrive, as the Croatian music critic Aleksandar Dragaš puts it. And so could be ‘Shoot The Bear’.

The singer Eckman observes the world like the lone drifter at the end of the bar who has seen it all yet keeps his cards close to his chest, you never know who is listening…
